Paths of Corruption
over 10 years ago – Tue, Sep 15, 2015 at 10:32:30 PM

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. People, dedicated to the cause of good, sometimes make the wrong choices, albeit for the right reasons. Politicians take bribes, all the while intending to use the money to write legislation to help feed the poor, or somewhat ironically, tackle campaign reform. Religious organizations promote peace and good-will towards all, but they become blinded in their righteousness and turn into cold-hearted, intolerant people, all the while thinking they act in accordance with their faith. Vigilantes become the thing they hate, even as they try cut the cancer of crime out of their city.

We see these characters throughout fiction, television and movies. The Shield, Supernatural, and the Wheel of Time novels are great examples. Vick Mackey, Shane Vendrell, and the rest of the strike team start out as good cops, but start taking immoral short cuts which eventually lead to the strike team getting a (rightfully deserved) reputation as corrupt cops.We also see this in Robert Jordan’s epic Wheel of Time novels. The Children of the Light are as bad as they come, but they commit their own atrocities in service to “The Light.” Similarly, the Aes Sedai manipulate kings and queens, claiming their reasons are for the good of the world.

In Codex Infernus, we’re going to introduce rules for corruption which not only track a character’s journey to the “dark side,” but also tracks the hazards of becoming so “good,” the character is just as iniquitous as her enemies. These rules are meant for more cerebral games where players and game masters want to tackle issues of morality in their games. As with all the content in Codex Infernus, it’s entirely optional.

Update 3: Immortal Characters
over 10 years ago – Fri, Sep 04, 2015 at 11:45:59 AM

In this update, I want to discuss our rules for immortality. The idea of playing a character who has existed since the dawn of time provides innumerable options for adventures in either the history of our world, or even in the history of any fantasy world you can imagine! Want to play a character who marched with the legions of Rome in their conquest of the ancient world? Maybe your character fought with Duke Wellington at the battle of Waterloo, or witnessed the rise and fall of the Aztec Empire. The possibilities are endless.

To facilitate this in a Fast Furious and Fun manner, I’ve decided to make immortality a background edge you can choose during character creation (and only during character creation!)

This edge is my first draft. Let me know what you think!

Immortal

Requirements: Novice, (spirit d8?) You are immortal. You've lived since the dawn of time, warmed your hands on the fires of creation, fought with Alexander as he swept across Asia Minor, raided coastlines with vikings, fought with the allied powers in the invasion of Normandy. For the most part, you can't die. You take nonlethal damage from all types of attacks as long as they come from mortals. However, if you are ever attacked by an Immortal, you suffer damage normally.

Additionally, centuries of life has given you the time to refine your skills. You begin play with a single ability or skill at d12+3.
